Wing’s is a Chinese restaurant located in San Jose’s Japantown. An odd sight for sure. It has an old neon sign with flapping wings which looks like it may have been there from the beginning when it opened in 1925. Inside is dimly lit with blocked off booths which looks like mini brothel rooms because of the velvet wall paper, doorbell on the wall and beaded curtains to each entry. It definitely has character.
Aside from the unique atmosphere, the menu is Chinese, but more American Chinese. They don’t have bok choy or other items which you may find in more authentic Chinese joints, but they’ll work with you on what they have…which is perfect for this vegan.
They have a “Vegetables” section on the menu but that doesn’t mean its vegetarian. You’ll have to ask for NO EGG if you’re vegan
- My recommendations:
- Sizzling Rice Soup
- Mabo Tofu (hot bean curd) – I request button mushrooms because I don’t like shiitake -**my fav!
- Sweet Sour Tofu – You can ask for non-fried tofu – less fattening and egg free.
- Vegetarian Fried Rice – No egg
- Vegetable Chow Mein or Chow Fun – No egg
They’ll give you fortune cookies or almond cookies too. Although I don’t eat them because of the egg…it’s fun to read the cheesy fortunes. Enjoy!
